Personal data is today one of the greatest assets of global society directly impacting the definition of business models and the creation of opportunities. The whole world is witnessing a progressive phenomenon of citizens' personal data being deliberately collected processed and treated by public and private companies and institutions. This growing importance attributed to personal data brings to light issues involving privacy and protection of personal data and the need for interference by the Law to regulate this new reality.

The European Union has been concerned with the Germany Phone Number protection of these rights since which is illustrated by the creation of European Directive EC which established standards for its member countries to create legislation on the protection of personal data. However on May this directive will be replaced by the General Data Protection Regulation GDPR which will bring rules on the protection of personal data to be observed by all countries. -members of the European Union aiming to harmonize their laws give citizens greater control over their data and increase enforcement on companies that process and handle data.



But why should Brazil worry about European regulation? There is no shortage of reasons. Firstly because some Brazilian companies may be directly impacted by the new regulations. Secondly because business and commercial relations between Brazil and European Union countries may be mitigated by the fact that we do not have specific legislation on the subject. And thirdly because moving forward in adapting to GDPR rules can represent a competitive advantage for Brazilian companies as the expectation is that a national law with the same premises will soon be approved.
